WWE Elimination Chamber 2014

Here it is, the last stop on the Road to Wrestlemania, the Elimination Chamber PPV! Billed as the most brutal match in WWE history, this match saw six of the top superstars doing battle in the Chamber. I was really looking forward to the Shield vs. The Wyatt Family and the Chamber match itself, but more on those later.

Pre-show match: The Rhodes Brothers vs. Rybaxel

This match saw Curtis Axel’s grandfather, Larry “The Axe” Hennig accompany the team for moral support. Ryback started the match using his power and strength to earn advantages especially during the “commercial break”. Goldust was isolated for most of that time, but Cody got a flurry of offense once he was tagged in, hitting his signature Disaster Kick to Ryback on the outside, and then finished off Curtis Axel with Cross Roads. I felt this was an entertaining match, although the outcome was never in doubt. Because it was the pre-show, it felt like a match I’d see on RAW.

Intercontinental Championship: Jack Swagger vs. Big E

This was the official kick-off match for the PPV and it was our first look of the evening at Zeb Colter as he accompanied Jack Swagger to the ring (he would accompany Cesaro to the Chamber later on in the evening).  Early on in the match, both men effectively demonstrated their great amateur backgrounds and it was pretty even. Both earned advantages outside the ring, but Swagger seemed to be the better man for this part of the match, hitting a front suplex on Langston from the top rope. Swagger went for his Patriot Lock twice before Langston countered with a kick to the head. He then delivered the Big Ending to Swagger and retained his title. I think this match was a great showing for both men, and for a brief time I wondered if Langston’s title reign was ending, but on this night it wasn’t meant to be. My favourite part of this match actually happened after the bell rang when Bad News Barrett, on a raising platform (that would later malfunction), talked about how Russia had gotten more medals at the now closed Olympic games and in four years’ time, Europe would once again prove its superiority over the United States.

Unified Tag Team Championship: The Usos vs. The New Age Outlaws

This was another match where the outcome was never really in doubt, despite Michael Cole saying that the Usos have the Outlaws number. Outlaws got the first real advantage after Jay Uso was hip-tossed into the corner (with an awkward landing), but Jay later got a roundhouse kick in on the Road Dogg, allowing both teams to get a tag. After a missed Fame Asser by Billy Gunn, the Road Dogg provided a distraction from the outside, allowing Billy to retain the tag titles on a roll-up pin. This match pretty much went exactly like the other Uso matches, although I wish WWE wasn’t so liberal with the use of roll-up pins and superstars gaining victory in that way. For the second time Bad News Barrett would make an appearance. This time his bad news was that Daniel Bryan was not going to win the Elimination Chamber match and, at that point, the Yes Movement would cease to exist.

Darren Young vs. Titus O’Neal

Most of this match was Titus O’Neal proving (as he already has) that he’s the stronger of the two. For the most part this was Darren Young getting beaten up, his only real good offensive move being a neck breaker on the apron. O’Neal would spend most of the match working on Young’s back, then hit him with a sit-down power bomb to win the match.  For me this match wasn’t necessary for the card as there was enough going on and I think the lack of crowd reaction for this match is proof of that. No one was into the match at all because no one really cared about either of these guys. I honestly forgot that Darren Young was still around and his loss in this match is a good explanation of why. After this match we saw the third appearance of Bad News Barrett and this time he barraged the audience with insults towards Minnesota’s NFL team and about how he is better than Hulk Hogan (who will host Wrestlemania XXX next month)

The Wyatt Family vs. The Shield

This was the most anticipated match of the night, both for myself and for the crowd, who were cheering  “This is Awesome!” before the match even started. Two of the most dominant teams during the past year finally squared off and everyone was waiting for the chaos that would ensue. During a long stand-off between the two sides, the crowd was split between The Shield and the Wyatts and when the match finally got under way, it was the Shield with the early advantage. Dean Ambrose had the weakest appearance for the Shield, being isolated by the Wyatts and later disappearing entirely from the arena during the match. Rollins showed great athleticism landing on his feet after an attempted German suplex from the top rope by Luke Harper, but once Roman Reigns got tagged in, the chaos the fans wanted so badly finally happened. We saw Luke Harper dive through the second rope at Ambrose, followed by Rollins diving over the top rope at Harper. Ambrose and Bray would fight into the crowd, at which time Ambrose would leave the arena and never return. In WWE, chaos usually means the poor Spanish announce table will have to be destroyed and this match was no different as Seth Rollins was slammed through the aforementioned table from the top of the English announce table. That left Roman Reigns all alone and, despite a great effort at fighting off the Wyatts, he suffered the fate of Sister Abigail’s Kiss from Bray Wyatt, and the Shield was handed one of their very few losses as a team. There was a lot of hype leading up to this match, and to me it delivered on that hype. It was exactly what you’d expect to happen between these two teams and it was thoroughly entertaining. Personally I would rather have seen the Shield win, but I suspect this loss will create more dissension and problems between the Shield members as we move towards Wrestlemania.

Divas Championship: Cameron vs. AJ Lee

Before the match, AJ once again got on the microphone to trash talk (something she does really well) her original opponent Naomi who suffered an injury and couldn’t compete. Instead she faced Cameron who looked good up until Tamina (who was at ringside) got involved. In an effort to help AJ, Tamina went for a super kick, but missed Cameron and hit AJ by accident. Cameron would have won with that, but Tamina again interfered causing AJ the disqualification, but allowing her to retain her title belt. This was a very short match, that didn’t have any surprises. I think everyone knew AJ was going to win and she did. What the audience didn’t expect was Bad News Barrett making his fourth appearance of the night, this time saying how people will be so mesmerized by the WWE Network that they will forsake all other responsibilities (school, work, even garbage collection) and end up living on the street.

Batista vs. Alberto Del Rio

In this match, we got to see if Batista had finally managed to win over the crowd, but alas it was not the case as Del Rio had crowd support for the entire match. Del Rio came out at the start of the match sporting a neck brace and a crutch saying he’s too injured to compete, right up until he started beating Batista with the crutch before the opening bell and breaking it. Once the bell rang, Del Rio would continue the assault on the legs and left arm of Batista much to the delight of the crowd. Batista got booed pretty hard when he had any offense at all and eventually hit the Batista bomb on Del Rio to win the match. The fans have pretty much had it with Batista (despite only being back a month) and told him so by chanting for other wrestlers like Y2J and Brock Lesnar during his match. JBL remarked on Del Rio’s uncharacteristic fan support during a match where he was clearly the designated villain. This marks the second match back for Batista and there was no unpredictability in the match as there was no way Batista was going to lose.

Elimination Chamber Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship: John Cena vs. Christian vs. Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Cesaro vs. Sheamus

We finally got to see these six superstars in the Elimination Chamber Match and how each of them would fare in such an unforgiving structure. Sheamus and Cesaro started the match and traded offensive moves until the next entrant, Daniel Bryan got involved. Bryan, who entered the match with a heavily taped shoulder (thanks to his impromptu match against Kane on the previous episode of RAW), was the first to suffer an “OMG” moment when he got thrown through the side of an empty pod, bad shoulder first. Christian was the fourth entrant and he went right after Daniel Bryan, but was also thrown through the side of an empty pod by Cesaro who got a near fall out of it. John Cena entered fifth, suffered White Noise from Sheamus, and that left Randy Orton the final man to enter the match. When it got a little hot in the kitchen for Orton he tried to reseal himself in an empty pod, but it proved a futile attempt when Sheamus Brogue Kicked the pod and broke the glass. Sheamus was the first man to be eliminated when Christian delivered a splash from the top of a pod. Christian was eliminated soon after when he walked into a running knee by Daniel Bryan. Next up on the chopping block was Cesaro who suffered an Attitude Adjustment on the steel floor and then tapped out to the STF. Cena then put Orton in the STF when the shock of the night happened: the Wyatt family appeared in the chamber and proceeded to do a number on John Cena, costing him his chance at the Wrestlemania Main Event. This brought Kane out to the ring to get the Wyatt’s out of the arena, but while he was there Daniel Bryan attacked him with a drop kick. Bryan would later hit Orton with his running knee only to have Kane interrupt the count, costing Byran the title. After Bryan kicked out of the first RKO, Kane once again got involved causing Bryan to suffer a second RKO, which allowed Randy Orton to retain his championship. I thought this match also did a great job living up to the hype and was a strong showing for every participant. Christian got the first elimination of the night, Cesaro managed to get a Giant Swing in the match, but there was entirely too much interference in this match for my liking. I know it’s the only way Cena can lose the match, but I felt that all the distractions took away from the great performances of the guys who were little more than place holders.

Overall thoughts

I found this to be a thoroughly entertaining PPV all the way through. The card looked pretty good, although I could have done without the Titus O’Neal-Darren Young match entirely. It was a short match that held very little interest in the crowd, but it did nicely set up the crowd for the Shield-Wyatt Family match that followed. I mentioned WWE’s liberal use of roll up pins, but thankfully only the Tag Title match ended that way and not one of the more important matches, especially the chamber match. My favourite part of the goes to Bad News Barrett. I loved seeing him figure so prominently despite not being in a match. I think WWE shows could use a lot more of that going forward. This event has always been as much about setting up Wrestlemania storylines as it has been about the chamber match for the major titles and this year it was no different. It served that purpose while still being entertaining. It will be interesting to watch RAW this evening and see how the storylines will start playing out. Next month is WWE’s Superbowl, the grandest stage of them all: Wrestlemania. I look forward to another entertaining night with Hulk Hogan as the special guest host.

NFL Off-Season: Free Agency (Offence)

It is that time of year again. The Super Bowl has just ended and now all 32 teams must turn their attention to winning the 2015 Super Bowl. First up in my off-season preview is free agency. With cellar teams like the Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns having upwards of $40 million to spend and more veteran teams like the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers over the cap, this off-season could be very interesting. I will be taking a look at the offence in this article, key free agents who can make a team better and the team I believe they will sign with.

Quarterbacks:
This year's quarterback class is a stinker with Michael Vick and Josh McCown being the only semi-decent options out there. Even that is a stretch with both being backups at this point. Let's take a look at where I think some of the "key" quarterback free agents will end up.

Michael Vick: Vick is the best option available this year in a weak class of quarterbacks. If healthy, he could be a nice stop-gap option for a team who drafts a quarterback high in this year's draft class and wants the pick to develop. He could also be a fit for a team with a young quarterback who needs an established backup. Look for the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills or Cleveland Browns to be his top suitors, with the Raiders giving him the best chance to be a starter again.

Josh McCown: If McCown turned the clock back a decade and gave his performance this year back when he was 25, he would be a hot commodity. But with him turning 35 this year, he is the best backup on the market. After putting the Chicago Bears on his back to keep team in playoff contention so late in the season after Jay Cutler went down, he earned himself a nice multi-year deal, which will probably lead to his last of his career. Look for him to head down to Tampa Bay to join and mentor Mike Glennon. If not, he can return to Chicago to continue to back up Jay Cutler.

Josh Freeman: This one hurts me personally being a Buccaneers fan, thinking how far Freeman has fallen and how fast it has taken. I even have a Freeman jersey myself. Beyond that, he is the only quarterback who, with his age and his potential, could be a good "buy low" option for a lot of teams with aging quarterbacks and no heir apparent. The Pittsburgh Steelers or the New York Giants would be a good landing spot for him to go and develop as a person and a player with already established winners at quarterback he can learn from.

Other key free agents include: Matt Cassel, Chad Henne, Matt Flynn and Shaun Hill.

Running Backs/ Fullbacks:
The class at running back this year is actually quite deep in talent, but with a lot of runners who have question marks about durability and if they can be the main guys for teams. At fullback, there is a small list of solid guys hitting free agency who could really help teams that implement a power running style.

Darren McFadden: The former first rounder has tons of talent, but is fragile. He has only broken the 1,000-yard mark once in his career (2010). Injuries have plagued his career. At this point he is not a number one option for a team, but he can be a great second back for a team. He has solid hands, is a hard runner and an okay blocker. A team like the Arizona Cardinals would be a great spot for him to land, teaming with Andre Ellington if Rashard Mendenhall doesn't resign.

Maurice Jones-Drew: It's sad to potentially see Jones-Drew leave Jacksonville as he has been their franchise player/entire offence since Fred Taylor left. This opportunity might be best for him though as he could move on to a contending team and give their ground game a real shot in the arm. MJD has had injury-plagued seasons the last couple years, but carrying the weight of an entire offence on your back will do that. Jones-Drew still has at least 3-4 years left in the tank and, on a solid team with playoff intentions, can be the lead runner. I think he would be a great option for a young team like the Browns, who are a few key players away from a playoff run, or the Titans if they cut Chris Johnson.

Knowshon Moreno: If I was Knowshon, I would hope to goodness that the Broncos would resign me. But with other in-house options to go with, that is very much unlikely. A good all-around back, he is a good change of pace runner who can punish the other teams defence. The New York Giants would be a good spot for Moreno to team with David Wilson to give Eli Manning a good 1-2 punch in the backfield.

John Kuhn: Kuhn is a solid all around full back. He is a punishing blocker, solid runner and has hands out of the back field. A lot of teams could use a solid veteran like Kuhn, but I don't believe he will move on from the Packers. Lead-blocking for offensive rookie of the year Eddie Lacy and blocking for All-World quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a sweet gig. Expect him back in the frozen tundra of Lambeau.

Other key free agents include: Ben Tate, Donald Brown, LaGarrette Blount, Rashad Jennings, Erik Lorig.

Wide Receiver:
A lot of depth in this years receiver class with no real number one guys but a tons of number 2 guys and slot receivers. With so many teams getting away from the run and becoming pass heavy teams these gentlemen will be in high demand.

Eric Decker: Peyton Manning has made Eric Decker a soon-to-be rich man, probably a lot richer then what he should be. Decker is a solid number two receiver with good hands, ball skills and solid run blocking skills. Decker wants to be paid like a number one guy and will more then likely get that money. I am thinking Kansas City would be a good spot for him to land to help out Alex Smith make that offence more potent.

Jeremy Maclin: After suffering an ACL injury last year, Maclin will unlikely be back with the Eagles this year. A speedster and play maker with the ability to stretch the field, he will be highly sought after as long as he is fully recovered. Maclin will be well served in signing a short term one or two year, "prove it" contract so he can get back on the market for a longer term contract shortly. Look for the New York Jets to make a play for him to give Geno Smith some more weapons.

Julian Edelman: Like Eric Decker, becoming a legendary quarterback's new favourite target will make Edelman's bank account very happy. He caught a lot of passes from Tom Brady this season, becoming his number one target. He replaced Wes Welker, catching 105 passes. For a solid possession wide out who runs good routes, a role in the slot would be ideal. Look for a team like Houston or Tampa Bay, who desperately need a good slot receiver, to be good spots for Edelman to ply his trade.

Other key free agent wide outs include; Hakeem Nicks, Golden Tate, Anquan Boldin, James Jones, Jacoby Jones.

Tight End:
The biggest free agent this year is a tight end. New Orleans Saints superstar tight end Jimmy Graham is the stud of this year's crop. There is a lot of depth this year with many quality starters.

Jimmy Graham: The team that signs this game changer will thank their lucky stars that New Orleans is in a real big cap crunch right now or else this would not even be an issue. Not saying that it's not possible for Graham not to be back catching passes from Drew Brees, but there will have to be a bunch of cuts that happen before that's possible. Graham's ability to catch the ball and make plays is top four in the league. His blocking leaves a lot to be desired though. I do believe the Saints will do everything humanly possible to resign Graham, If they can't look, the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills or New York Jets could step up and make a real push for him because of their big need for a game-changing tight end.

Dennis Pitta: I'll just start off by saying I believe that Pitta will be back in Baltimore. New offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak uses his tight end quite often. If you need to find an example of that, look at Owen Daniels in Houston. Pitta is a great pass catcher that hasn't had the chance to shine yet because of injury and the scheme Baltimore has used in the past couple years. If Pitta somehow does not resign with the Ravens, the Detroit Lions are a good suitor to pair him with new head coach Jim Caldwell. who use to be Baltimore's offensive coordinator.

Jermichael Finley: When healthy, Finley is a top five tight end with ball catching skills and big play capability. That is when is he's healthy. After going under the knife to have spinal fusion surgery, Finley will more than likely have to go the Jeremy Maclin way of things and sign a one year "prove it" kind of deal before heading back out to the market. Any of the New York state teams could use Finley at tight end, so look for Buffalo, the Jets and the Giants to make a play for him.

Other key free agents include; Brandon Pettigrew, Dustin Keller, Brandon Myers, Fred Davis

Offensive Line:
This year more than any there is plenty of young, high-end talent hitting the market. Alex Mack and Branden Albert highlight the list quality of players out there. Let's take a look at a couple of the big free agents on the offensive line and where I think they will end up.

Eugene Monroe: Traded to the Baltimore Ravens from Jacksonville, Monroe played very well after the trade. The Ravens' offence was just a mess in general last year, but the line was one of the better pieces. Look for Baltimore to resign Monroe and let Michael Oher hit free agency.

Alex Mack: The young centre from the Brown will get paid in free agency. A solid all-around centre, Mack is good in pass protection, run blocking and smart at calling line protections. He is probably the best centre in the game. I believe Cleveland will back up a Brinks truck to his door to try to keep him. If he does leave, look for Tampa Bay as a potential landing spot if Davin Joseph or Carl Nicks are cut.

Branden Albert: The writing was on the wall with Albert hitting free agency as soon as Eric Fisher was taken number one overall in last year's draft. One of the top five left tackles in the game, Albert will demand a lot of attention and dollars. Looks for Miami to go hard after him to replace Bryant McKinnie.

Other key free agents include; Jared Veldheer, Jordan Gross, Jon Asamoah, Geoff Schwartz, Michael Oher.

Well, that is my look at the offensive side of the football's upcoming free agency period. Stay tuned for my look at the defensive free agents including where key free agents like Jarius Byrd and Brian Orakpo end up.

The Schmucks predict Super Bowl XLVIII

Photo from calvinayre.com
With Super Bowl XLVIII taking place Sunday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, it's time for the Schmucks to give their annual Super Bowl picks. Will they side with the top-ranked Denver offence or echo the sentiment that "defence wins championships" and pick Seattle? Check out the predictions below! (Alphabetical by last name)

Kieran Blair
The build up to this year's Super Bowl has focused largely on Denver's overwhelming offence versus Seattle's smothering defence. However, with an experienced quarterback at the helm, Denver will be able to win the battle of attrition between the number one offence and number one defence. The absence of Qwest Field's 12th man will render Seattle's defensc less intimidating, and will allow Peyton Manning to audibly bellow his countless renditions of "Omaha" throughout MetLife Stadium. Underdogs have won the last four Super Bowls; don't bet on Seattle to make it five.

Chris Lejambe
The biggest game of the year sees the league’s best offence in the Denver Broncos going head to head with the league’s best defence in the Seattle Seahawks. I can’t deny the fact that the Super Bowl victory goes to the best defences because we’ve seen that time and time again. On this day, I predict Denver’s offence, led by Peyton Manning, will prove to be more powerful. I felt that the Seattle defence looked vulnerable in the first half of their game against the 49ers and that if it had been Denver’s offence, the Seahawks would never have gotten back into the game. Add that to the lack of Seattle’s home crowd and the inexperience of Russell Wilson in the big game, I think this is Denver’s game to lose. Denver 24 Seattle 14

Sean McDermott
Defence wins championships. It's how my Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl and it is how the Seattle Seahawks will win theirs. I believe it will be a tightly contested game that comes down to the last five minutes to decide who is the champ. Give me a 24-21 win by the Seahawks, with Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch as your MVP with 135 yards on the ground on two rushing touchdowns.

Mike Mitchell
Much like my championship winning Fantasy Football team (A Boy Named Suh, what up?) my Super Bowl prediction is all Denver. There's a reason that the Broncos sported the best offense in the NFL this season. Peyton Manning has been playing this season like a kid playing Madden, picking apart defenses seemingly at will and setting a number of records in the process. How many records, you say? Well, here goes: points, touchdowns, players with 10 or more touchdown, passing first downs, wins by an owner, games with 50+ points (they had 3!), points in second half, passing touchdowns, passing yards, longest field goal, extra points (75 for 75), most four-touchdown passing games, most two-touchdown passing games, most 400-yard passing games, most 90+ passer rating games.

Yeah. Seriously. Although most of those records are Manning-centric, the running game has really stepped it up as of late, making opponents pay for guarding those receivers a little bit too closely. Now, I understand that Seattle has the top ranked defense in the NFL this year, but are those stats skewed? Seattle has by far the loudest home stadium, which helps massively. The elements at home are also something the Seahawks can lean on, but neither of those things will be an advantage in New York this weekend. Cold, awful weather? Denver can play in that. Loud Super Bowl crowds? Manning has been there, done that. Ditto Wes Welker, his number one target. Russell Wilson is a great young player, yes, but does he possess the poise that his rival has? I don't think he does. His receivers leave much to be desired as well. If Denver's so-so defense can stifle Marshawn Lynch, this game will be over before it beings. All due respect to Richard Sherman, but Wes Welker, Eric Decker, Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas aren't Michael Crabtree. They're who Crabtree wishes he was, being thrown to by a quarterback who controls and calls the game so well. It'll be a stiff test for the Seattle D, and one that I don't think they'll pass. Remember what I said about Denver's running game? If Seattle focuses too much on the pass, that running game will burn them. Having the best kicker in the game in Matt Prater doesn't hurt the Broncos either.

The over under is a high one. With the weather, I don't know that I'd take the over. But make no mistake, Denver wins Super Bowl 48, capping off an amazing season for Manning and the Mile High club (the football club, not the fun one).

Mike Saratsiotis
Denver Broncos - 27
Seattle Seahawks - 17

Like many other predictions out there for the Super Bowl, it's hard to bet against Peyton Manning. When a QB is in the discussion of possibly the "greatest ever", you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe if he were up against a more experienced quarterback, like Drew Brees or Peyton's brother Eli, then it would be a closer game. Given added factors such as the cold weather conditions, intensity of the grand stage, and the confidence of a win against the Patriots, it seems like it's the Broncos' game to lose.

Brett Smith
It was an easy match-up to predict. The Broncos and the Seahawks were two of the three best teams in the NFL heading into the regular season. Before the season started, I picked the Broncos to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in MetLife. After a 16-game regular season and post-season run, I see no reason to change my pick. Granted, Seattle has a fantastic defence. Richard Sherman can make a receiver go away for an entire game. The problem is the amount of targets at the disposal of Peyton Manning. If Sherman takes away Demaryius Thomas, Manning still has Eric Decker, Wes Welker and Julius Thomas. As for Denver's defence, Marshawn Lynch will get his. However, Denver still has the ability to shut down a runner. The Broncos held Jamaal Charles to under 100 yards rushing in both meetings and held NFL rushing leader LeSean McCoy to 73 yards. For those reasons, Denver takes it. It'll be close. I'm guessing Denver 27, Seattle 24.

Josh Spadafora
My prediction for the beloved "Marijuana Bowl" goes as follows. Neither offence nor defence wins championships. I will side with Broncos for this Super Bowl based on experience. Peyton Manning versus Russell Wilson is your key match-up in my opinion. A legend versus a second year player who had some struggles with his offence throughout the season. My prediction lies within experience, and Denver has more of it in the needed positions.

There you have it. If was up the Schmucks the Denver Broncos will win Super Bowl XLVIII. Very surprising to see everyone except Sean pick the Broncos. The key theme throughout the selections was the experience of Peyton Manning compared the sophomore quarterback Russell Wilson. Will Sean prove everyone wrong?
